This peer-reviewed publication, published in Small, presents the concept and proof-of-principle of the SafeWax technology. SafeWax is a biodegradable, multifunctional coating inspired by natural plant wax cuticles that provides a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides. Its superhydrophobic surface prevents fungal adhesion and colonization, while also protecting crops from UV radiation and low humidity. The coating’s self-cleaning and water-harvesting properties further support efficient water use and promote plant resilience.
The paper introduces the SafeWax concept, explains its underlying mechanisms, and reports initial laboratory and greenhouse results demonstrating significant reduction in fungal infections and improved crop tolerance to environmental stress. This work lays the scientific foundation for SafeWax as a bio-inspired physical barrier technology, aligning with the objectives of the EU Green Deal to reduce pesticide use by 50% by 2030.
