SafeWax: Bio-inspired Fatty Acid-based Coatings Advancing Sustainability and Climate Adaptation in Agriculture

The study introduces SafeWax, a novel, bio-inspired fatty acid-based spray coating designed to protect agricultural crops from extreme heat and drought caused by climate change. Mimicking the natural superhydrophobic waxy cuticles of plants like lotus and broccoli, SafeWax forms a biodegradable, crystalline protective layer that reflects near-infrared radiation (reducing leaf temperatures by up to 4.5°C) and absorbs UV light to prevent sunburn, all while allowing up to 95% of visible light through to preserve photosynthesis. Additionally, its superhydrophobic properties prevent water accumulation, facilitate dew collection for supplemental hydration, and maintain functional stability under thermal and environmental stress, offering a promising solution to enhance crop resilience and food security.
