Development of bioinspired and sustainable fatty acid-based coatings for multifunctional protection of agricultural crops
IVS-IPSTA Annual Meeting Winter 2025, Kfar HaMaccabiah, Ramat Gan, December 21
Session: Energy & Sustainability
Date: December 21, 2025
This poster presentation introduces the development of an eco-friendly, synthetic superhydrophobic (SH) coating designed to fortify crops against climatic extremes through a non-toxic, biomimetic approach. Utilizing naturally abundant stearic acid (SA), we have engineered a sprayable formulation that self-assembles into a hierarchical microstructure, mimicking natural waxy barriers to create a robust air-trapping surface.
This study demonstrates that fatty-acid-based self-assembly offers a scalable, sustainable, and multifunctional physical barrier, providing a novel solution for global crop protection in an era of increasing environmental volatility.
