SafeWax Featured in an Article on the “The Jerusalem Post” Website

Israeli researchers develop SafeWax coating that could cut pesticide use by 50%

The article describes a breakthrough development by Israeli researchers from the Technion: SafeWax, a sustainable, biodegradable coating designed to protect crops and reduce the use of chemical pesticides by at least 50%. Inspired by the natural waxy layer  found on plants like lotus leaves and broccoli, this superhydrophobic material is applied via a simple spray. It creates a thin, uniform barrier that prevents fungal spores from germinating and inhibits disease development without interfering with essential processes like photosynthesis.

Beyond disease prevention, SafeWax offers multifunctional protection by filtering harmful UV radiation and reducing plant dehydration, which helps crops withstand heat stress. The coating is made from biodegradable fatty acids that can be derived from food waste, contributing to a circular economy. Tested successfully on tomatoes, peppers, and grapevines, this technology is positioned as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional pesticides, addressing the growing challenges of climate change and fungal resistance in modern agriculture.
